Finland's much-delayed Olkiluoto (OL) nuclear reactor , Europe's largest nuclear power plant unit, began regular electricity production on Sunday, April , News of OL's commissioning comes shortly after Germany announced it will shut down its last three remaining reactors.
The volume of electricity production from this nuclear power plant is an important addition to clean domestic production. The plant unit is operated by a Finnish clean energy company called Teollisuuden Voima (TVO). The company says the plant will produce energy for at least the next years.
“The production of Olkiluoto stabilizes the price of electricity and plays an important role in the Finnish green transition. The electrification of society continues, and the production of environmentally friendly electricity is undoubtedly one of the main assets that Finland has,” says President and CEO Jarmo Tanhua.
The reactor alone is expe C Level Executive List cted to meet around % of Finland's electricity demand, reducing the need for imports from Sweden and Norway.
Europe's largest nuclear reactor OL is designed to produce , MW of electricity, enough to power approximately million homes. Construction of Europe's largest nuclear reactor, the country's first new plant in four decades and Europe's first in years, began in It was originally scheduled to be completed in , but the project was delayed several times due to various technical problems.
The plant unit intrinsically operates at full power and the first annual outages will take place in March
The test production phase alone comprised about , tests with more than , test reports collected. Once the analyzes of the last phase of trial production are completed, the contractual end of the Olkiluoto project will occur and the operator will initiate the necessary steps to begin commercial production.
